Bangladesh’s Journey to the Universe
13 April 2017

On 6 April 2017 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Bangladesh Astronomical Society (BAS) organised a daylong workshop event titled ‘A journey to the Universe’. Dr. Farseem Mannan Mohammedy, currently teaching at the Department of EEE, BUET and also the Joint secretary of BAS, was the main speaker of this program.

The event was mainly focused on the enhancement and refinement of the basic knowledge about different aspects of astronomy and cosmology among the students of Class 8 to 11, age group 13-17 years. Enthusiastic students from different institutions came to join the program. Starting with the discussion on the comparison of different sizes of stars, the program continued with the visualization of Juno’s approach to Jupiter and many more.

Topics discussed during the session were: the Universe, the Milky Way, Juno Approach Movie of Jupiter and the Galilean Moons, star size comparison, Voyager: Journey to the Stars, dark matter, exoplanets, how to find exoplanets, and the ultimate fate of the Universe. The opacity of the students’ curious minds were greatly reduced; the use of effective videos and images enabled clear understanding of the respective topics.

Before leaving, all of the students were provided with a renowned book on astronomy.

Programs like this one, organized by BAS, will surely be helpful in creating enthusiasm about astronomy among the Bangladeshi students and also provide them with the required boost for their journey to the universe.
