Since 2015, the Community Empowerment Program in Central Amfoang has been empowering the community with STEAM education, in line with the development of a high-tech scientific facility of the National Astronomical Observatory in Central Amfoang. Astronomers and community development experts work with the local community to improve human resources and sustain local resources on the island of Timor, Indonesia.
The Community Empowerment Program is intended as a form of capacity building of human resources as well in order to ensure the sustainability of local resources. Demands for strengthening the human resource capacity has grown due to the development of the high-tech science facility of the National Astronomical Observatory in Central Amfoang.
The Observatory has produced several videos with videographer Muhammad Yusuf, to share their efforts in community development. You can watch these videos below and view highlighted screenshots on the right.
This video is a brief documentation of one of the programs in community development projects in locations around the Observatory of Timor in 2016.
The goal of this project is to have thriving villages and a successful observatory. Strengthening the human resource capacity becomes very important to establish a form of symbiotic mutualism between the observatory and the local community. UNAWE Indonesia encourages teachers, locals and children to gather skills and knowledge necessary for a sustainable future.
Video of the Community Empowerment Program, contain background, objectives, and activities that have been carried out with local villages and schools in Timor.
Protecting the local environment and its resources will increase sustainability, by teaching the community through STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) how to procure clean water and energy sources. This unique symbiosis will benefit both the community and the observatory.
Video Training Series Astronomy: Fundamentals of Astronomy. Example of lectures given in local schools and villages in Timor.
This project is conducted by astronomers of Institut Teknologi Bandung and community development experts of Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics. Under the leadership of Premana W. Premadi, the project will continue its community development in the region around the Observatory throughout 2017 and the following years.
