On 8 July 2016, UNAWE Moldova held its first activity in Leuseni (Hincesti County), in the Republic of Moldova. Participants were children from 4 - 5 years old in the local kindergarten.
Children were introduced to the wonders of our universe by Tofanica Bogdan Marian, national coordinator of UNAWE Moldova, using materials from the Universe in a Box.
As the first lesson, the kids learned about The Earth, Our Home Planet and they quenched their curiosity asking a lot of questions on the world we live in. Subjects like the shape of the Earth, what is up and what is down, why there are days and nights, why the seasons change, were very well received by the youngest kids. Follow-up lessons will be organised in August, during the summer holiday, when the kids will learn about the Moon, the Sun and the Solar System.
“The goals of the activities are to encourage children from disadvantaged communities to develop an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) lessons. I found the Universe in a Box to be a great tool and the kids loved it! We will used it in our forthcoming lessons for the kids to enjoy the beauty and grandeur of the Universe we live in,” says Tofanica Bogdan Marian.
