The beginning of this year was marked by “Mission X - Train like an astronaut”, a program by NASA, ESA, and the UK Space Agency, that aims to inspire students aged 8-14 to learn more about nutrition, exercise, science and space exploration. This free education programme was developed by scientists and fitness professionals working with astronauts and space agencies.
The programme was implemented in Children’s City Zilda Arns, in Campos Brazil, thanks to a partnership between the Astronomy Club Louis Cruls and Codemca (Municipality Development Company Campos). Two geodesic metal buildings in the Children’s City are dedicated to space science and video conferencing with astronauts.
General Coordinator of the Astronomy Club, Professor Marcelo Oliveira Sousa says there are few places in the world with facilities to promote leisure and knowledge specific to children. “In the Children’s City, children can have contact with objects that teach them about space.” Several kits of Universe in a Box were donated to the Children’s City to make this possible.
For many people, objects in astronomy are far removed from their personal lives. The Universe in a Box kits by UNAWE provides these objects for play activities, putting planets and stars in our own hands. The kit offers educators materials to have their students really connect to the wonders of the Universe.
