Universe Awareness is very happy to announce our second new national node for 2016: Haiti!
The coordinator of this new national node is the Haitian Astronomical Society, which was founded by dr. Rulx Narcisse in 2013. The Haitian Astronomical Society supports science education of Haitians, particularly in the field of astronomy.
In February, UNAWE Haiti organised a video screening for 30 children about comets and asteroids. They also organised a telescope event with children at the football field in Deschappelles. “Our goal was to raise awareness about astronomy among the children,” says Rulx Narcisse.
In March and April, UNAWE Haiti is also engaging children and participating in a children's drawing competition organised by Astronomers Without Borders. “We're trying to have community children involved and sending us their drawing, which we will send to Astronomers Without Borders,” says Narcisse.
UNAWE Haiti will have monthly meetings with the public about astronomical subjects. During the next meeting on 26 March, for example, they will show a documentary about the Moon.
Are you interested in organising activities in Haiti or you want to support UNAWE Haiti? Please contact national coordinator Rulx Narcisse here.
The Haitian Astronomical Society was established in January 2013 to bring together young Haitians in the field of astronomy and to create a pool of participation. Its main purpose is to make a positive impact and engage young Haitians in astronomy activities, thus contributing to the creation of a different and positive image of the country.
