Planetary Maps for Children
3 December 2015

Welcome to the Solar System! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk on the surface of Mars? Or the strange moons of Saturn and Jupiter? Here you can find maps of planets and moons for children, which you can view on the internet, or you can download them and have the file printed in a nearby print or photocopy shop in colour, up to large sizes. The best is to place them next to your bed, on your wall, or maybe on the ceiling so that you can study them any time you want!

All maps were translated into 11 languages, which can be found here. If you want a more 3D-idea of the different worlds, you can play around with the rotating globes.

The maps are hand-drawn and awesome for kids to explore the different worlds, which even have aliens on them. But the authors note that: “The aliens depicted on the maps are creatures of imagination. The only known living things In the Solar System can be found on the Earth. Life and traces of life are sought by space probes on Mars, Europa and Titan, with no success so far. Life, as diverse as ours, is likely to be found only on planets in other solar systems in the future, with a surface temperature similar to that on the Earth. “

A special thing about these maps is that the cartographic part of the map is accurate and up-to-date. Each map was designed by different graphic artists, using their own visual style.

The scientific content was contributed by NASA postdoc Henrik Hagitai and the maps were made with the professional support of ICA Commission on Planetary Cartography. In the near future they plan to add Pluto and Rosetta’s comet and other irregular small bodies.

Have a nice trip through the Solar System and make sure you do not get lost on the way! Take a map with you.
