Not one, not two, but four of Sri Lanka’s largest newspapers will begin featuring Space Scoop on a weekly basis this month, helping the country’s lucky population keep up-to-date with the latest astronomy news, no matter their age or astronomical expertise.
The public-friendly Space Scoop articles are currently translated into 34 languages by an expert team of voluntary translators. Space Scoop will be published in three of these languages in Sri Lanka, including English along with the countries two main languages, Sinhalese and Tamil. By making Space Scoop available to the people of Sri Lanka in their own language and in the national media, we can potentially inspire a new audience with the wonders of the cosmos.
Space Scoop articles will be published in four leading nationwide newspapers and magazines. Sinhalese Space Scoops will be published weekly in Wijeya educational weekly magazine which, on top of retail copies, gives 100,000 copies free of charge to students in rural areas. Tamil articles will be published weekly in Vijey and English language articles will be printed in the Sunday Times newspaper’s Funday Times magazine.
Moreover, Tamil astronomical articles from UNAWE-Sri Lanka will be published weekly in Genius educational newspaper by Virakesari. A total of more than 500,000 prints will be published weekly through the publishers. All the articles are available online as well.
Thanks to our Sri Lankan coordinators and translators: Thilina Heentigala, Janith Weerasinghe and Sri Saravana.
