The UNAWE national node in Morocco has launched a new campaign to popularise space science. They set up an activity with the theme ‘Exploring the Solar System’ for 10,000 students in different parts of the Moroccan kingdom, including Casablanca , Rabat, Ifrane, Azrou, Marrakech, Beni Mellal, Agadir, Fkih Ben Saleh and Benslimane. The activity runs this summer from May until August and takes place in schools and holiday camps.
This large-scale action mobilises a large number of students from elementary and secondary schools to work out the general composition of the solar system and the position of our planet Earth. In a two hour workshop, the students are asked to describe and think about what they know of the solar system and cut out images of the planets and glue them on a poster in the right order from the Sun. In the picture, you can see the end result of the workshop at the School of Yassamin in Casablanca, two weeks ago.
Since the official launch of the UNAWE Morocco programme in 2011, more than 10,000 elementary and secondary schools from around the country have participated in various activities, including workshops, national competitions on astronomy and Ifrane astronomy festivals. While taking part, they had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the basics of astronomy: the sky at night, the planets, the stars and the Universe in general.
Taking advantage of the momentum, the Moroccan node has decided to give a new impulse to their actions of popularising science by launching this introductory-to-astronomy campaign about the solar system. This is an effort to expand children's minds, awaken their curiosity for science and stimulate a spirit of global citizenship and tolerance in them.
