A GIFT For Southern African School Teachers
3 December 2013

Southern African secondary school teachers can now apply to participate in the first UNESCO-EGU-ESA Geosciences Information for Teachers (GIFT) workshop, which will cover the topic of Climate Change and Human Adaptation. Selected teachers will receive free registration and help covering travel costs to the meeting, which is taking place in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on 26–28 February 2014.

For the past ten years, the EGU’s GIFT workshops have been successfully spreading first hand scientific research to teachers of primary and secondary school, shortening the time that research takes to disseminate from scientist to textbook to teacher and offering usable practical activities for the classroom.

The EGU has partnered with UNESCO’s Earth Science Education Initiative in Africa, which was set up to support the development of the next generation of Earth scientists in Africa, to organise a new series of annual GIFT workshops to be held around the African continent over the next four years. ESA is also collaborating on the African GIFT workshop, which will take place over the course of three days with 40 teachers from across the region and 8–10 speakers, half of whom will be non-African experts.

Teachers can apply to participate in the workshop by sending their application materials to sa-loc@egu.eu by 12 January 2014. Application information and further details about the UNESCO-EGU-ESA GIFT workshops is available for download.

Please distribute this information to those you think may be interested in participating in this workshop.
