For most people, meeting an astronaut is a once in a lifetime opportunity at best. But, earlier this week, a group of primary school children from Heidelberg in Germany, got the chance to meet three astronauts at once! On 3 July, a group of 137 primary school children were invited to the Haus der Astronomie (House of Astronomy) in Heidelberg to meet three visiting astronauts: John-David Bartoe, Jean-François Clervoy and Claude Nicollier.
The children were split up into three smaller groups which were each given a full hour to ask their guests some questions. Questions ranged from: “How do you cook in Space?” to the popular, “How can I become an astronaut?”
Although German is the native language of all the participating children, some even asked their questions in English since only one of the astronauts could speak German. Absolutely impressed, the astronauts described to the children how special the Earth looks from outer space, and encouraged them to take good care of our 'spacecraft', Earth, with its billions of crew members! After the Q&A sessions, much fun was had by the astronauts in the Universe Awareness Playroom, where, laughing, they managed to unhinge the giant Earth ball as soon as they entered!
Needless to say, all children went home with a personal autograph, and who knows, maybe some of these children will become astronauts because of this event!
