Children across the globe are gearing up for the 2013 Mission X challenge: to train like an astronaut. Starting 11 February 2013, children between 8-12 years old will be hitting gyms, football fields and basketball courts across the world to train hard and eat healthy. This six-week mission promotes regular exercise and healthy nutrition among young people using astronauts as role models.
Working in teams, the school children will attempt to complete physical challenges during their lessons. Each activity a team completes will earn them points. It's estimated that as many as 15,000 contestants will be competing from over 20 countries around the world. At the end of the mission, the teams scoring the highest points will be revealed on the Mission X website.
During the training kids will practise scientific reasoning and teamwork while learning about healthy eating, exercise and many aspects of the human body and physical training. With modules such as ‘Energy of an astronaut’ to teach them about the effects of healthy eating and ‘Jump for the Moon’, a hands-on task targeting bone strength, the heart and muscle endurance.
