“My alien lives on Mercury and has a very long nose to keep itself warm at night!”
“Mine has magnetic feet to live on Titan!”
This is how the young girls attending UNAWE’s ‘design your own alien’ workshop described their creative alien life forms that could live on other worlds than the Earth. During the workshop the girls were challenged to think about the possibilities of life on the planets Jupiter and Mercury or the moons Titan and Io. They learned about the differences between the Earth and other worlds and imagined how an alien would have to adapt to live there. For example, what does an alien need to live on Io, where the atmosphere is very thin? Or to survive on Jupiter, where intense storms rage?
This workshop was part of the Greenlight for Girls Day that was held at 13 October in Brussels. During this event, girls aged 11 -15 from international schools in Brussels were immersed in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. 300 girls attended this day full of fun, interactive activities and workshops, including UNAWE’s workshop.
Greenlight for girls (G4G) is a non-profit organisation based in Brussels and is run entirely by volunteers. The mission of G4G is to inspire girls and young women to follow a future in science and just like UNAWE, they focus mainly on children from disadvantaged backgrounds. UNAWE hopes to continue their collaboration with g4g, to reach even more children!
