Three months from today, hundreds of thousands of people from around the world will welcome the launch of World Space Week 2012.
The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from 4-10 October. These dates commemorate the launch of the first satellite, Sputnik 1 (October 4, 1957) and the signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (October 10, 1967).
In March 2012, Universe Awareness (UNAWE) and the World Space Week Association signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to encourage cooperation between the two organisations and support their shared goals of promoting astronomy and space public outreach and education. Following the signing of the MoU, UNAWE became an official partner of World Space Week.
UNAWE has already helped to support World Space Week by creating the original artwork and design for this year’s poster, which is now available for download. The theme for World Space Week 2012 is "Space for Human Safety and Security", which will celebrate how Earth observation, navigation and telecommunication satellites improve our everyday lives and help to safeguard our environment.
World Space Week offers a perfect opportunity to inspire children to develop an interest in science and technology.
