Explore Science, a five-day open-air science exhibition, opened yesterday in the Luisenpark in Mannheim, Germany, and will run until Sunday, 24 June 2012. The slogan for the event, "We count on you!", is more than just a message to the next generation of scientists visiting the exhibition, as this year’s theme is ‘Mathematics’.
This is the seventh year that the Klaus Tschira Foundation has organised Explore Science. Last year, more than 55,000 children and adults visited the event. Based on the opening day, the 2012 exhibition will be even bigger. EU Universe Awareness (EU-UNAWE) is once again participating in the exhibition by running several hands-on demonstrations for children. On the first day of the exhibition, EU-UNAWE reached about 400 children.
At the EU-UNAWE stand, children are introduced to mathematical concepts by using sizes and distances in our Solar System. For example, children learn why the Sun and Moon appear to be the same size in the sky by measuring how far away you have to place a larger ball to make it look as big as a smaller one. Children also gain an appreciation for why astronomers need special units of measurement, such as the astronomical unit and lightyear.
Explore Science is open from 9:00-17:00 on weekdays and11:00-18:00 at the weekend. Free tickets can be downloaded from the exhibition website.
