On the 19th of November, 2011 UNAWE Colombia and Astroseneca de Uniandino in Bogotá, organised a workshop for children ages 5 to 11. A set of sessions allowed children to build up their knowledge of and make connections between different topics in science.
In the first session, children made a model of a dinosaur park. This engaged the children in a lively discussion about the age of the dinosaurs.
During the second session, which was focused on fossils, children could recreate the ammonite fossil and understand how real scientists do their job.
The day ended with an astronomy session about the Earth-Moon system. Children built a scale model to show the different size of these objects and also to demonstrate that distances on Earth are different than distances in space. Making use of the UNAWE Earthball, they understood that the distance between the Earth and the Moon has to be filled with a line of 30 Earthballs!
UNAWE Colombia finished the day by telling some myths about the Moon. In one of the stories children could link the name of the Colombian city Chía to the Moon Festival celebrated by the people of that region.
