In April 2011, UNAWE Morocco was established by the National Aldebaran Project and the National Network of UNESCO schools. Their first activity was the National Astronomy Contest: The Solar System, Yours to Discover. This astronomy contest challenged children to make a model of the Solar System.
From all over Morocco, 62 teachers participated in two training sessions about the project and the contest. These workshops were held at the UNESCO National Commission Office in Rabat.
Twenty six models of the Solar System were built in two months! The five winners received astronomy resource packs and feedback from the teachers showed great motivation to embrace future activities.
UNAWE Morocco is now preparing new activities: teacher training sessions will be taking place in the Oukaimeden Observatory and five new astronomy clubs will be started in primary and middle schools. Also, the first Kids Workshop will soon be launched, with activities that will include a 3D model of the constellation of Orion.
