On 24 September, UNAWE-Sri Lanka ran a UNAWE session in conjunction with the first Scout Camp in Sri Lanka. During this activity, 100 scouts (between 8–10 years old) and 20 teachers participated.
The UNAWE session consisted of an introduction to the night sky and Solar System, followed by astronomical observations. The children enjoyed identifying the constellations and having their first experience of looking at objects through binoculars.
Other activities such as astronomy word searches, colouring astronauts and moons and building paper rockets, completed the night.
As a positive result of this camp, UNAWE-Sri Lanka is now planning to do a workshop series for students from grades 2 – 9 and a teacher training program for teachers from several local schools.
