UNAWE’s Deadly Moons Celebrates The Moon Festival
12 October 2011

On 17 September, UNAWE's Deadly Moons participated in the Chinese Moon Festival in Tipperary, Ireland.

The Chinese Moon Festival is organised by the Irish Chinese Contact Group, which supports Irish parents who have adopted children from China and also promotes Chinese cultural awareness in the minds and hearts of these children.

During the Festival, the Deadly Moons workshop was a joy for the children. As one of the best UNAWE educational resources, this interactive tool is designed for children aged 4-12 years to teach them about our Moon and the other exotic moons in our Solar System. Deirdre Kelleghan, supporter of Universe Awareness in Ireland and the mind behind the Deadly Moons workshop, adapted the workshop to show the Harvest Moon in particular, so children could talk about the traditional Chinese activity of looking at the full moon and thinking of the people they love.

Several Harvest Moons were drawn and the children showed a particular interest in the beautiful moons Tehys and Hyperion. It was an opportunity for the children to learn more about astronomy and also for UNAWE to learn from the children more about Chinese astronomy, in particular about Zhang Yuzh, the father of Chinese Astronomy.

At the end of the workshop, all the parents and other children enjoying the event applauded the parade of Moon-drawings. Moon cards were distributed to each child and those with the exceptional drawings received the DVD “Eyes in the Skies”.
