ADEA and UNESCO Launch Educational Books for Children
15 October 2011

The Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) and UNESCO's Regional Office in Dakar has launched Childhood Cultures, a series of books that aim to support early childhood development in Africa.

Through the book's main characters, Bouba and Zaza, children can learn how to face problems that are currently affecting African families. The books facilitate the dialogue and discussion of important but sensitive topics in the family context. Children learn how to identify their own strengths and how to make choices for themselves. The books teach children about  responsibility, ideas of justice and the difference between right and wrong, which allows children to better adapt to their environment and to develop social skills.

The concept of Childhood Cultures is designed for children aged 3 to 8 years of age, but can also be useful for older children. Older children can use this series to consolidate their knowledge and apply their acquired reading and comprehension skills, as well as to share this important information with the younger children in their family or community.

The first publications are available in English, French, Portuguese and Kiswahili.
