UNAWE Iceland has been inspiring children and their parents with the wonders of Astronomy for the past few years now.
One way they are doing this is by giving workshops in which children and their parents learn about the Sun, stars, black holes, and also all about the Auroras, which they can see almost every clear winter's night! Up until now, six of such workshops have been held. Most recently, two in 2011, one in the capitol city, Reykjavík, and one in the northern city, Akureyri. Each of these workshops attracted more than 60 children along with their parents. The workshop in Akureyri was also attended by a host of a radio show on science, which aired the event a week later!
UNAWE Iceland not only offers workshops, but also does hands-on experiments with kids and their parents. In these experiments they cover several objects in our Solar System: they show why the Moon waxes and wanes, discuss why there are hardly any craters on Earth, use the Galileoscope to look at Jupiter and Saturn and let the children see and touch real meteorites.
The workshops and experiments are thrilling experiences for everyone involved; not only the children but also their parents. UNAWE Iceland has already planned two more workshops in 2012 and has enough material and plans for many workshops and experiments to come!
