On 8 December 2017, George Miley received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Miley founded the Universe Awareness programme in 2006, as a testament to his vision of using astronomy as a tool for the education and development of underprivileged children around the world.
The honorary doctorate was partially due to his work in setting up the International Astronomical Union Astronomy for Development (IAU OAD), which uses astronomy for capacity building. Miley also took the initiative for LOFAR, a European network of radio telescopes, which Ireland recently joined.

“I never dreamed that I would receive an honorary doctorate from anyone,” says Miley. “It is particularly emotional for me that it came from Trinity College Dublin, in the city where I spent the first 21 years of my life.” He is sure that this will help reinforce the scientific links between Ireland and the Netherlands.
Leiden emeritus professor George Miley is (co-)author of more than 350 scientific articles, and became a Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion for his services to astronomy and society. With the associated funding of the Academy Professorship by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, he was able to create Universe Awareness.
